The Balvenie, known for its artisanal yet pioneering approach to making whisky, has invited artist Victo Ngai to create a Limited-Edition Collection of five of its signature whisky offerings, two of which are global travel retail exclusive. Embracing the provenance of the single malt Scotch Distillery, Ngai celebrates The Balvenie’s unhurried and nurturing approach to its craft.

Cask Finishes including The DoubleWood 12YO, Caribbean Cask 14YO, PortWood 21YO Madeira Cask 15YO (TREX) and Pedro Ximénez Cask 18YO (TREX), each become storytelling canvases. Ngai presents both mythical and legendary tales of The Balvenie across the packaging, imbued with significance and rich with hidden detail. These whiskies are themselves layered with storied creativity; The Balvenie’s Cask Finishes gain their distinctive character from maturation in two differing cask types, a process founded by The Balvenie in 1983. On the packaging, Ngai interprets this innovation by symbolically weaving two tree trunks into the composition, their tree-rings hinting at the liquid’s age.

Ngai’s artworks encapsulate the brand’s belief in time as a creative force, a philosophy she explores through references to the four seasons. Spring conjures the spirit of hope and anticipation which accompanies the first stages of whisky production, depicted as a blousy peony nourishing the Balvenie Bees who feast on nectar from stamens cleverly disguised as ears of barley.

Summer evokes the energy and vitality of a distillery in full flow; a painted wisp from the distillery’s active Malt House chimney rises as the mythic Green Lady, The Balvenie’s rumoured resident ghost. A Scottish Deerhound playfully watches on from the stream, itself a nod to the ‘Dipping Dog’, the copper vessel once used for a bygone transgression: discretely siphoning a personal reserve.

Autumn speaks of transformation, where depth and character evolve in the precious liquid over time. From a barley-grain chrysalis a butterfly emerges with golden leaf-wings, an emblem of patience rewarded.

Finally, winter brings maturation, a quiet strength shown through a snow bunting in flight, its wings echoing the cycles of craft and time. As snowflakes fall, they turn to golden drops, bringing the long-anticipated gift of whisky.

Further symbolism is incorporated into the narrative-led packaging. The meandering Robbie Dhu, the distillery’s mineral-rich spring, captures golden drips from the dew-laden flowers in an ever-evolving cycle of nature’s creativity. A lone traveller, floating mindfully on a drifting oak leaf, embodies the restraint of The Balvenie’s patient craftspeople charged with balancing a natural process with the hand of the maker.

Andrew Furley, Global Brand Managing Director, The Balvenie, said, “It is a joy to see Victo Ngai’s creative interpretation of our artistry and time-honoured whisky-making process. Her charming and atmospheric scenes transpose layered meaning to our Cask Finishes packaging, perfectly complementing the creative and complex flavours of the whisky itself.”

Rufus Parkinson, Global Travel Retail Managing Director, William Grant & Sons, added, “Global Travel Retail offers a unique stage to bring The Balvenie’s stories of craftsmanship and time to an international audience of discerning travellers. Exclusive expressions such as the Madeira Cask 15YO and

Pedro Ximénez Cask 18YO are thoughtfully created for this channel, offering something distinctive and meaningful that cannot be found elsewhere. The addition of the PortWood 21YO for Asia Pacific airports is indicative of the region’s particular importance. Paired with immersive activations in key airport locations, this new collection allows us to connect with consumers in memorable and engaging ways, perfectly reflecting the spirit of discovery that defines travel.”

Artist Victo Ngai, commented, “The Balvenie carries rich stories across both the distillery and its whiskies, and it has been a true pleasure to translate these into visual form. I see many parallels in our creative approaches, from craftsmanship and a drive to explore new possibilities, to the belief that the most meaningful work is rarely achieved by taking the easy route.”

Victo Ngai is an award-winning Los Angeles-based artist from Hong Kong, whose meticulous craftsmanship and hand-made designs reflect The Balvenie’s commitment to patience, technical skill and creativity in the art of making.
