First seen at the Maria Grazia Chiuri’s debut Dior SS17 show is a new flap bag emblazoned with gold lettering J’ADIOR – now everybody wants one…

Making its debut at the Dior show by Maria Grazia Chiuri, the J’adior flap bag has become a veritable statement bag. It encapsulates the House’s new codes: its strap allows it to be carried in the hand, and the J’adior signature in gilded metal represents modern positivity.

Dior says, “The Florentine hinterland is the cradle of Italian savoir-faire, and it’s here that the J’adior bag is brought to life. Everything starts with the highly exacting choice of leather. Marco is in charge of this, with forty-two years of experience under his proverbial belt; he boasts a skilled hand and an expert touch. The leather must be perfect so that it can be cut with the blade, following the pattern outlines of the twenty-two elements of the bag. Then an artisan uses a gold ribbon to emboss the words “Christian Dior Paris” on what will be the inside of the bag and affixes the six letters spelling “J’adior” on the hand strap. The latter are held in place by a carefully calculated pressure which makes it possible to avoid marking the leather. Now the craftsman applies three coats of black paint and a layer of fixative varnish on all the exposed edges of the J’adior.”

The next step is the assembly of the body of the bag, with the parts sewn together using a “marcapunto” stitch, borrowed from the trunk-making tradition, that’s both strong and aesthetically appealing. Identifiable by its graphic form, it highlights the curves of the bag and lends a timeless touch.

Lastly, the gilt chain engraved with hundreds of small “CD” motifs is placed between the two clasps. This allows it to be worn on the shoulder or cross-body, or perhaps detached completely.
