After a long wait for mere non-celebrities the Chanel Gabrielle bag is arrived in stores around the world – here’s what you need to know…
The Gabrielle bag is one of those simple yet ingenious designs at which Karl Lagerfeld excels. He got the idea from looking at virtual reality goggles and upending the shape. Cue a flat-bottomed, neo hobo with an ingenious double chain handle that straddles both shoulders for ease of carrying, and security.
With Pharrell Williams, Kristen Stewart, Cara Delevingne and Caroline de Maigret as the faces of its campaign, the Gabrielle bag was debuted at the Paris Metiers D’Arts show in December last year. And while the recent autumn/winter 2017 show might have been overshadowed by a rocket launch (see story) and spectacular space-age set, there were various versions of the Gabrielle bag spotted on the runway, and on the arms of notable Chanel favourites on the front row.
The bag’s rigid bottom structure is where the reference to the augmented reality googles most manifests. (It nods too to the classical binocular cases gentlemen would wear over the shoulder at the races.) Crafted from aged calfskin with a classically Chanel quilted body and smooth base, the Gabrielle comes in black, white, navy and beige in several variations.
A hobo version? Why of course! Available itself in three different formats, it’s a playful take on this technologically inspired luggage. A backpack form? Yes! Ideal for any millennial who has saved up their pocket money for this double-C clasp drawstring. What about a throw-it-all-inside shopper? They’ve got that covered, along with a supple lambskin and python drawstring purse with its sturdy, rigid bottom casing.
With a nod to the first-ever bags created by the ultimate fashion visionary and founder Gabrielle Chanel herself, the bag’s lining comes in precisely the hue of garnet that she used for her bag debut. No doubt the possibilities opened up by virtual reality would have delighted the visionary Gabrielle as much as they have Lagerfeld.
The Gabrielle communication onslaught debuts on April 3rd 2017 with the campaign shot by Lagerfeld and devoted to the Gabrielle handbag.
The bags were due to be arriving in stores during March and April, the Gabrielle bag is a “pillar” style for Chanel, and is considered the first major new model since the Boy, introduced in 2011.
