Royal Salute has launched a prestige whisky collection inspired by the 62-gun salute at the Tower of London.

The collection includes Royal Salute 62 Gun Salute Original Reserve, The American Oak Reserve and The Peated Reserve. The whiskies are said to be the ‘pinnacle’ of the brand’s permanent offering.

The Original Reserve was available prior to the collection’s release, however the two other whiskies are new expressions.

The collection is inspired by the brand’s regal heritage, as well as the 62 Gun Royal Salute, which is fired on state occasions from the Tower of London.

Royal Salute master blender Sandy Hyslop said: “As the crowning jewel in Royal Salute’s portfolio, the crafting process behind this collection was lengthy and meticulous until I was absolutely confident we had blends representative of an authentic 62 Gun Salute ceremony.

“The collection’s flavour profile is beautifully complex and rounded, connecting all the senses to create a lasting taste experience that reflects the significance of the occasion.”

The Original Reserve’s notes include sweet orange and nutty and oak flavours on the nose, while the palate offers tastes of peach and boiled sweets. This whisky rounds off with vanilla, crème brûlée and cinnamon.

‘Reflecting the intensity of the gun salute spectacle’, The American Oak Reserve has notes of vanilla fudge, freshly baked shortbread and genoise sponge on the nose, with hints of hazelnuts, lime zest and toasted oak developing over time. To taste, drinkers may find ripe tropical fruit flavours and a finish that is ‘long, sweet and complex’.

Lastly, the Peated Reserve intends to ‘capture the subtle smokiness that drifts over the City of London at the conclusion of the salute’.

Its profile consists of dark cherries and sweet green apples on the nose, which give way to blossom honey and milk chocolate honeycomb, and then on the palate, orange zest and lemon sherbet layered with notes of Jamaican ginger cask and toasted oak. The finish is described as ‘long and lively’ with ‘enduring sweet smoke notes’.

In addition, the whiskies are presented in piano lacquered boxes and decanters that have hues ‘reflective of precious stones’.

The Original Reserve (US$3,000) and American Oak Reserve (US$3,300) are available from selected retailers globally and The Whisky Exchange.

The Peated Reserve (US$3,300), meanwhile, will initially be a duty free exclusive before being rolled out globally.

The brand recently created a series for travel retail called the Small Batch Collection, which comprises a selection of rare cask-finished whiskies.
