Edrington-owned The Macallan has revealed the third and final Scotch whisky in its Concept Series.

The Macallan Concept Series is a limited collection of annual bottlings, designed to highlight the creativity and culture behind the brand’s whisky making. The series is available exclusively in travel retail.

The Macallan Concept No. 3 mostly comprises whisky from first-fill, Sherry-seasoned American oak casks, combined with a selection of European oak casks, refill and virgin oak casks.

Tasting notes include aromas of fresh pear and apricot, leading to oak spice, ‘delicate’ herbal notes and vanilla sweetness on the palate, and finishing with buttery pastry notes.

The Macallan partnered with US graphic designer David Carson on the single malt whisky, who also produced a festive campaign for The Macallan last year.

Carson worked with Polly Logan, The Macallan whisky maker, on the expression, which has been bottled at 40.8% ABV after the pair realised their favourite number is eight.

Logan said: “I was deeply inspired by [David’s] vibrancy, and drew on this to create a bright, fresh whisky. Its pale yellow colour, which we’ve named Californian gold, reflects David’s sun-soaked days as a surfer and it also reveals the citrus notes which shine through.

“Whisky and art fans alike will appreciate the fine balance achieved in this wonderfully uplifting expression combining fruity notes of pear with warming cinnamon spice and a creamy, vanilla sweetness.”

The Macallan Concept No.3 is packaged in a presentation box featuring Carson’s designs. Carson also designed the bottle label, which includes a bright chevron symbol with his signature.

Carson said: “The Macallan people I’ve dealt with have been so open to exploring new ideas and to different types of creativity. Their obvious love for nature and where they work, the hand-doneness and the wooden casks – you have so much of that with The Macallan collaboration and I am very proud of it.”

The Macallan Concept No.3 will initially be available from July at The Macallan Boutiques in select international airports, and China Hainan Island duty free stores, before being rolled out to the wider global travel retail market in August. It will have an RRP of US$150 (£115/ €135) per bottle.


Concept Number 1, released in 2017, was inspired by the discipline of surreal art and brought together imagination and idealism to create a fantastic, sensorial world of whisky where anything and everything was possible.

Released in 2019, Concept Number 2 brought together music and whisky, combining the twin passions of The Macallan Whisky Maker Steven Bremner, who is also a DJ.

Each release is designed to create an extraordinary taste experience, Concept Number 3 is a fitting finale for the highly innovative Concept Series.
