Chanel has introduced the J12XS collection of watches offering a fresh take on a mould-breaking classic by accessorising the tiny timepiece so you can wear it in a variety of chic ways…

It could never be said that Chanel rests on its horological laurels. This year has already seen multiple variations on the 2015 Boy.friend, new versions of Mademoiselle Priv\u00e9, some strikingly beautiful high jewellery secret-cuff watches, pretty wheat-themed cocktail watches as part of Les Bl\u00e9s de Chanel and the maison\u2019s first dedicated man\u2019s watch, the Monsieur<\/a>, to name but a few.<\/p>\n

So word of a new J12XS collection surely comes as no surprise. However, it does come with high expectations. Chanel has form for timepieces that are ahead of the curve, with their ongoing strategy being to dictate the aesthetic rather than follow trends.<\/p>\n

\"cuff\"

The original J12 launched in 1999. Back then, its unisex styling and hi-tech ceramic material felt bold and unusual. \u201cThe J12 is such a classic watch, yet in 1999 it was perceived as very new,\u201d says Nicolas Beau, international watch director at Chanel, discussing the latest offering. \u201cTwo years ago we decided to look at it again \u2013 it felt time for a shake-up.\u201d<\/p>\n

First up, the most visible difference is the size, a petite 19mm, referenced in the \u201cXS\u201d part of the name (as in \u201cextra small\u201d). Then, of course, there\u2019s the added French wit of wordplay: \u201cXSsively feminine\u201d, \u201cXSsively sophisticated\u201dand \u201cXSsively determined\u201d are just some of the qualities of watch and wearer described in J12XS\u2019s campaign.<\/p>\n

Most surprising is the glove, available in plain black leather or embroidered by the ladies at Chanel\u2019s Lesage atelier. Surely this is a nod to Karl Lagerfeld, fashion\u2019s most famous fingerless glove wearer, I suggest to Beau.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a way,\u201d he replies, \u201cbut our inspiration came more from the gloves and driving watches of the 1930s.\u201d Either way, as an accessory it feels like a piece of theatre, most likely to be embraced by Chanel\u2019s more fashion-forward customers.<\/p>\n

Then comes a multi-strap black patent cuff with a touch of bondage about it, as well as three high-jewellery cuffs. The latter are one-offs, fashioned from solid white gold, covered in leather (the large size retails for just shy of \u00a3100,000) and adorned with a watch.<\/p>\n

Lesage cuffs complete the wrist section, with the intricate hand embroidery taking a day to complete at the atelier. These feel the most special and also the most linked to Chanel\u2019s heritage. They\u2019re fashion watches, but in the most heightened, luxury sense, rather than the more prosaic \u201cthrow-away\u201d one.<\/p>\n

A black ceramic watch ring (pictured top) is the final element of J12XS. \u201cIt\u2019s a fun interpretation,\u201d notes Beau, \u201cand today women are wearing larger rings, so its size is not an issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Interestingly he acknowledges that the timekeeping element (a quartz movement across the whole range) is now secondary. \u201cMany people don\u2019t really need to know the time. It\u2019s everywhere, with mobile phones,\u201d he points out. \u201cThese are objects that you wear for style.\u201d<\/p>\n

Again, he mentions the \u201cfashion watch\u201d label, but is keen to clarify. \u201cThese are the ultimate luxury fashion watches, but ones that in two years\u2019 time you will reach into your cupboard to put on again.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a fine line to walk, injecting fashion elements into a luxury watch collection. But with Chanel\u2019s track record it will most likely be a success \u2013 although only time will tell.<\/p>\n
