Suvarnabhumi Airport<\/b> (Thai<\/a>: \u0e17\u0e48\u0e32\u0e2d\u0e32\u0e01\u0e32\u0e28\u0e22\u0e32\u0e19\u0e2a\u0e38\u0e27\u0e23\u0e23\u0e13\u0e20\u0e39\u0e21\u0e34<\/span>; RTGS<\/a>: Suwannaphum<\/span>; pronounced \u00a0[s\u00f9.w\u0101n.n\u00e1.p\u02b0\u016b\u02d0m]<\/a><\/span> (Thai pronunciation<\/a>); from Sanskrit<\/a>, \u0938\u0941\u0935\u0930\u094d\u0923\u092d\u0942\u092e\u093f<\/a>, “Golden Land”), (IATA<\/a>: BKK<\/b>,\u00a0ICAO<\/a>: VTBS<\/b>), also known as (New) Bangkok International Airport<\/b>, is one of two international airports<\/a> serving Bangkok<\/a>, Thailand. The other is Don Mueang International Airport<\/a>.<\/sup><\/p>\n

Suvarnabhumi was officially opened for limited domestic flight service on 15 September 2006, and opened for most domestic and all international commercial flights on 28 September 2006.<\/p>\n

The airport is currently the main hub for Thai Airways International<\/a>, Bangkok Airways<\/a> and Orient Thai Airlines<\/a>. It also serves as regional gateway and connecting point for various foreign carriers.<\/p>\n

The airport is located in Racha Thewa<\/a> in Bang Phli<\/a>, Samut Prakan<\/a>, about 25 kilometres (16\u00a0mi) east of downtown Bangkok. The name Suvarnabhumi<\/i> was chosen by King Bhumibol Adulyadej<\/a> and refers to the golden kingdom<\/a> hypothesised to have been located somewhere in Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n

The building was designed by Helmut Jahn<\/a> of Murphy \/ Jahn Architects. It was constructed primarily by ITO JV<\/a>. The airport has the world’s tallest free-standing control tower<\/a> (132.2 metres or 434 feet), and the world’s fourth largest single-building airport terminal<\/a> (563,000 square metres or 6,060,000 square feet).<\/p>\n

Suvarnabhumi is the sixteenth busiest airport in the world<\/a>, sixth busiest airport in Asia<\/a>, and the busiest in the country<\/a>, having handled 53 million passengers in 2012,\u00a0and is also a major air cargo hub<\/a>, with a total of 96 airlines. On social networks, Suvarnabhumi is the world’s most popular place where Instagram<\/a> photographs were taken in 2012.<\/p>\n

The airport inherited the airport code, BKK, from Don Mueang<\/a> after the older airport ceased international commercial flights. A modern motorway no.7<\/a> connects the airport, Bangkok, and the heavily industrial Eastern Seaboard of Thailand<\/a>, where most of the manufacturing for export takes place.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
