Frankfurt Airport<\/b> (IATA<\/a>: FRA<\/b>,\u00a0ICAO<\/a>: EDDF<\/b>) (German<\/a>: Flughafen Frankfurt am Main<\/i><\/span>, also known as Rhein-Main-Flughafen<\/i>) is a major international airport<\/a> located in Frankfurt<\/a>, the fifth-largest city of Germany and one of the world’s leading financial centers. It is operated by Fraport<\/a> and serves as the main hub<\/a> for Lufthansa<\/a> including Lufthansa CityLine<\/a> and Lufthansa Cargo<\/a> as well as Condor<\/a> and\u00a0AeroLogic<\/a>. The airport covers an area of 4,942 acres (7.722\u00a0sq\u00a0mi) of land and features two passenger terminals with a capacity of approximately 65 million passengers per year, four runways and extensive logistics and maintenance facilities.<\/p>\n

Frankfurt Airport is by far the busiest airport by passenger traffic in Germany, the third busiest in Europe<\/a> after London Heathrow Airport<\/a> and Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport<\/a> and the 11th busiest worldwide<\/a> in 2014,\u00a0posting record passenger traffic with 59.6 million passengers using the airport, an increase of +2.6% from 2013.\u00a0It also had a freight throughput of 2.09 million metric tonnes<\/a> in 2013\u00a0it is also the busiest airport in Europe by cargo traffic<\/a>. As of winter 2012\/2013, Frankfurt Airport served 264 destinations in 113 countries, making it the airport with the most international destinations in the world.<\/p>\n

The southern side of the airport ground was home to the Rhein-Main Air Base<\/a>, which was a major air base<\/a> for the United States from 1947 until 2005, when the air base was closed and the property was acquired by Fraport.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
