Terminals 1 and 2 are linked by the <a title=\"Skyway\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skyway\"><i>skylink<\/i><\/a>, with <a title=\"Moving walkway\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moving_walkway\">travelators<\/a> to aid passengers with the 10\u201315-minute walk. Terminal 3 is linked to Terminal 1 and the <i>skylink<\/i> by a covered walkway. The <i>&#8220;skylink&#8221;<\/i> also connects the terminals to the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Manchester Airport railway station\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manchester_Airport_railway_station\">airport railway station<\/a> complex (known as <i>&#8220;The Station&#8221;<\/i>) and the<a title=\"Radisson Hotels\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Radisson_Hotels\">Radisson BLU Hotel<\/a>. The Skylink started construction in 1996 and opened 1997. It is the largest terminal at the airport. It was opened in 1962, by <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prince_Phillip,_Duke_of_Edinburgh\">Prince Phillip<\/a>, the <a title=\"Duke of Edinburgh\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duke_of_Edinburgh\">Duke of Edinburgh<\/a>, and it is a base for <a title=\"EasyJet\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/EasyJet\">EasyJet<\/a>, <a title=\"Jet2.com\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jet2.com\">Jet2<\/a> and <a title=\"Thomas Cook Airlines\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Cook_Airlines\">Thomas Cook<\/a>. Some other airlines that fly out of Terminal 1 include <a title=\"Brussels Airlines\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brussels_Airlines\">Brussels Airlines<\/a>, <a title=\"Emirates (airline)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emirates_(airline)\">Emirates<\/a>, <a title=\"Etihad Airways\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Etihad_Airways\">Etihad Airways<\/a>, <a title=\"Lufthansa\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lufthansa\">Lufthansa<\/a>, <a title=\"Swiss International Air Lines\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Swiss_International_Air_Lines\">Swiss<\/a>, <a title=\"TAP Portugal\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/TAP_Portugal\">TAP Portugal<\/a> and <a title=\"Turkish Airlines\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turkish_Airlines\">Turkish Airlines<\/a>. Terminal 1 is spread over an area of 110,000\u00a0m<sup>2<\/sup> (1,200,000\u00a0sq\u00a0ft).<\/p>\n<p>The terminal has 29 stands, of which 15 have air bridges, and is the largest of the three terminals. Gate 12 was specially adapted to accommodate the <a title=\"Airbus A380\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Airbus_A380\">Airbus A380<\/a> which is operated by <a title=\"Emirates (airline)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emirates_(airline)\">Emirates<\/a> on their route from <a title=\"Dubai International Airport\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dubai_International_Airport\">Dubai<\/a> to Manchester.<sup id=\"cite_ref-20\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manchester_Airport#cite_note-20\">[20]<\/a><\/sup> Terminal 1&#8217;s current capacity is around 11 million passengers a year.<sup id=\"cite_ref-autogenerated7_21-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manchester_Airport#cite_note-autogenerated7-21\">[21]<\/a><\/sup> compared with an annual capacity of 2.5 million passengers when it first opened.<sup id=\"cite_ref-autogenerated7_21-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manchester_Airport#cite_note-autogenerated7-21\">[21]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In the Summer of 2009, a \u00a350 million redevelopment programme for Terminal 1 was completed.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Manchester_Airport_.C2.A350m_overhaul_complete_22-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manchester_Airport#cite_note-Manchester_Airport_.C2.A350m_overhaul_complete-22\">[22]<\/a><\/sup> As part of the overhaul, which took over 2 years, a new \u00a314 million 14-lane security area opened during April 2008. The terminal&#8217;s arrivals area has since been revamped with additional catering and retail facilities. Terminal 1&#8217;s departure lounge has been expanded with a greater choice of shops and restaurants, following the virtual elimination of the landside area, and additional executive lounges have been added. It opened in 1993 and it is a base for <a title=\"Monarch Airlines\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monarch_Airlines\">Monarch<\/a>, <a title=\"Thomson Airways\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomson_Airways\">Thomson Airways<\/a> and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Virgin Atlantic Airways\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virgin_Atlantic_Airways\">Virgin Atlantic<\/a>. Some other airlines that use the terminal include <a title=\"Air Malta\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Air_Malta\">Air Malta<\/a>, <a title=\"Singapore Airlines\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Singapore_Airlines\">Singapore Airlines<\/a>, <a title=\"Qatar Airways\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Qatar_Airways\">Qatar Airways<\/a>,and <a title=\"United Airlines\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Airlines\">United Airlines<\/a>. <a title=\"Cathay Pacific\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cathay_Pacific\">Cathay Pacific<\/a> returned to the Terminal in December 2014 and operate a service to their hub at <a title=\"Hong Kong International Airport\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hong_Kong_International_Airport\">Hong Kong<\/a>. Terminal 2 is spread over an area of 52,000\u00a0m<sup>2<\/sup> (560,000\u00a0sq\u00a0ft).<\/p>\n<p>Terminal 2 has 20 gates, of which 14 have air bridges. The design of the terminal makes it capable of extensive expansion; planning permission already exists for an extension providing additional gates, together with the construction of a satellite pier. Terminal 2&#8217;s current capacity is around 8 million passengers a year, this will be extended to ultimately handle 25 million passengers a year.<sup id=\"cite_ref-autogenerated7_21-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manchester_Airport#cite_note-autogenerated7-21\">[21]<\/a><\/sup> In 2007, an \u00a311 million project commenced to redevelop Terminal 2 by improving security facilities and enhancing retail and catering services. This has resulted in the elimination of the land-side shopping area to allow for an expanded air-side departure lounge. The ground level arrivals area has also been redeveloped with improved catering and retail facilities. Like Terminal 1, following the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Smoking in England\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Smoking_in_England\">2007 smoking ban<\/a>, the indoor ventilated smoking room in the departure lounge was closed, however this was replaced in 2009 by an external smoking area at Gate 300 to allow passengers to smoke after passing through security. The departure lounge also has an unsupervised children&#8217;s play area at Gate 212. The terminal was known in succession as &#8220;Terminal 1 \u2013 British Airways&#8221;, &#8220;Terminal 1A&#8221; and &#8220;Terminal 3 \u2013 British Airways and Domestic\u201d before becoming simply known as Terminal 3.<\/p>\n<p>In June 1998, <a title=\"British Airways\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Airways\">British Airways<\/a> opened their new \u00a375 million terminal facility designed by <a title=\"Grimshaw Architects\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grimshaw_Architects\">Grimshaw Architects<\/a>, this being a major extension to Terminal 3, and became the primary user of the terminal along with codeshare partner airlines (<a title=\"Oneworld\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oneworld\">Oneworld Alliance<\/a>). Terminal 3 now spreads over an area of 44,400\u00a0m<sup>2<\/sup> (478,000\u00a0sq\u00a0ft).<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"British Airways\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Airways\">British Airways<\/a> currently operates a high frequency shuttle to their main hub at <a title=\"London Heathrow Airport\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/London_Heathrow_Airport\">Heathrow Airport<\/a> from Manchester Terminal 3. It operated a shuttle to its second hub at <a title=\"Gatwick Airport\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gatwick_Airport\">Gatwick Airport<\/a> until March 2013, but the route was dropped after a fall in demand.<sup id=\"cite_ref-23\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manchester_Airport#cite_note-23\">[23]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>This Terminal now handles the majority of domestic routes from Manchester as well as some scheduled European flights. <a title=\"American Airlines\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Airlines\">American Airlines<\/a> and <a title=\"US Airways\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/US_Airways\">US Airways<\/a> (until its merger with <a title=\"American Airlines\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Airlines\">American<\/a> in early 2015) operate daily flights to the <a title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\">USA<\/a> from Terminal 3.<\/p>\n<p>It is now primarily a base for low-cost carriers <a title=\"Flybe\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flybe\">Flybe<\/a> and <a title=\"Ryanair\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ryanair\">Ryanair<\/a>. Some other airlines that fly out of Terminal 3 include <a title=\"Air France\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Air_France\">Air France<\/a>, <a title=\"British Airways\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Airways\">British Airways<\/a>, <a title=\"Virgin Atlantic\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virgin_Atlantic#Little_Red\">Virgin Atlantic Little Red<\/a> services to London-Heathrow (However these services are due to end on 28 March 2015),\u00a0<a title=\"BMI Regional\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BMI_Regional\">BMI Regional<\/a> and <a title=\"KLM\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/KLM\">KLM<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>The airport has over 50 airline customers operating a global network of scheduled, charter and freight services.<\/p>\n<p>North American carriers at Manchester include <a title=\"American Airlines\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Airlines\">American Airlines<\/a>, <a title=\"United Airlines\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Airlines\">United Airlines<\/a>, <a title=\"Delta Air Lines\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Delta_Air_Lines\">Delta Air Lines<\/a> and <a title=\"US Airways\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/US_Airways\">US Airways<\/a>. The <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Virgin Atlantic Airways\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virgin_Atlantic_Airways\">Virgin Atlantic<\/a> scheduled USA services will be joined by <a title=\"Thomas Cook Airlines\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Cook_Airlines\">Thomas Cook Airlines<\/a> in May 2015 with frequent services to New York and Miami.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Thomas_Cook_launches_new_Miami_and_New_York_flights_from_Manchester_Airport_25-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manchester_Airport#cite_note-Thomas_Cook_launches_new_Miami_and_New_York_flights_from_Manchester_Airport-25\">[25]<\/a><\/sup> Caribbean services are mix of scheduled and charter services operated by <a title=\"Virgin Atlantic\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virgin_Atlantic\">Virgin Atlantic<\/a>, <a title=\"Thomas Cook Airlines\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Cook_Airlines\">Thomas Cook Airlines<\/a> and <a title=\"Thomson Airways\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomson_Airways\">Thomson Airways<\/a> to varied destinations including Cuba, Jamaica, Barbados, Dominican Republic and others.
