Istanbul Atat\u00fcrk Airport<\/b> (IATA<\/a>: IST<\/b>,\u00a0ICAO<\/a>: LTBA<\/b>) (Turkish<\/a>: \u0130stanbul Atat\u00fcrk Havaliman\u0131<\/i><\/span>) is the main international airport<\/a> serving Istanbul<\/a>,Turkey<\/a> (followed by Sabiha G\u00f6k\u00e7en International Airport<\/a>) and the biggest airport in Turkey<\/a> by total number of passengers. Opened in 1924 and located in Ye\u015filk\u00f6y<\/a>, on the European side of the city, it is 24\u00a0km (15\u00a0mi) west\u00a0of the city centre and functions as the main hub for Turkish Airlines<\/a>. In 1980, the airport was renamed Atat\u00fcrk International Airport in honor of Mustafa Kemal Atat\u00fcrk<\/a>, the founder and first president of the\u00a0Republic of Turkey<\/a>. It served over 51 million passengers in 2013, making it the 17th busiest airport in the world<\/a> in terms of total passenger traffic and the 10th busiest in the world<\/a> in terms of international passenger traffic. The Turkish Chamber of Civil Engineers lists Atat\u00fcrk International Airport as one of the fifty civil engineering feats in Turkey<\/a>, a list of remarkable engineering projects completed in the first 50 years of the chamber’s existence.<\/p>\n

In the 2013 Air Transport News awards ceremony, \u0130stanbul Atat\u00fcrk Airport was named Airport of the Year<\/i>.\u00a0Also, the airport has been named\u00a0Europe’s Best Airport<\/i> in the 40-50 million passenger per year category at the 2013 Skytrax<\/a> World Airport Awards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
