It works with an app on iOS and Android, automatically syncing with the sensor. Try leaving it on your sunglasses, shoes or other places to detect UV rays.

La Roche-Posay’s UV Sense, which L’Oréal launched this week at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, is the wearable tracker that other wearable trackers should aspire to be. It’s super tiny (nine millimetres around), fairly flat (two millimetres thick), and doesn’t need to be charged or Bluetooth-wired or anything to give you status updates on the environmental factors (UV exposure, pollution, humidity, allergen levels) around you that are affecting your skin.

You can shower, swim, and work out while wearing the app, and it’ll stay on for up to two weeks, or until you peel it off (it stays put on dry nail polish, but you’ll have to remove it if you want to switch colours). “We’re providing the consumer the ability to reapply the adhesive and wear it again and again,” says Guive Balooch, who spearheaded the device’s creation at L’Oréal’s Technology Incubator. “It will last a few months or longer, and is very environmentally clean to dispose of – as it doesn’t have a battery.”

It works, if you’re curious, by using near-field communication, the same technology that gives hotel key cards their swiping powers and car toll tags their readability. When your phone is nearby, its antenna reads the data and sends it to its companion app. “The central idea is UV monitoring, but you’ll be able to customise your dashboard to show pollution, humidity, and temperature, too,” says Balooch. “Say you’re going running. You can start a session on the app, and it will tell you all the environmental factors during your run, whether you were exposed to higher UV, for example, and it will recommend lifestyle or product solutions for those exposures.”

In short, using the sensor and app is like having a skin-care angel on your shoulder, reminding you to do all the things you know you should be doing but probably aren’t. That goes for applying sunscreen, reapplying sunscreen, seeking shade when rays are strongest, and the like. Which sounds boring, but are extremely important when you consider that the CDC reports that 76,665 people in the U.S. were diagnosed with skin cancer last year.

See more here

It may look like nail art, but the L’Oréal UV Sense, shown off at CES 2018, is a little UV sensor.
