Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” (Greek: \u0394\u03b9\u03b5\u03b8\u03bd\u03ae\u03c2 \u0391\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bb\u03b9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03b1\u03c2 \u0391\u03b8\u03b7\u03bd\u03ce\u03bd \u00ab\u0395\u03bb\u03b5\u03c5\u03b8\u03ad\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2 \u0392\u03b5\u03bd\u03b9\u03b6\u03ad\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2\u00bb, Diethn\u00eds Aerolim\u00e9nas Athin\u00f3n “Elefth\u00e9rios Veniz\u00e9los”) (IATA: ATH, ICAO: LGAV), began operation on 29 March 2001 and is the primary civilian airport that serves the city of Athens and the region of Attica. It is Greece’s busiest airport and it serves as the hub and main base of Aegean Airlines and its subsidiary Olympic Air as well as other Greek airlines. The airport is currently in Group 2 of Airports Council International (10-25 million) and as of 2014, Athens International is the 31st busiest airport in Europe.<\/p>\n

The airport currently has two terminals, the Main Terminal and the Satellite Terminal accessible by a foot-tunnel from the Main Terminal. It is designed to be extended in a modular approach over the ensuing years in order to accommodate the increase in air travel. These extensions are planned in a six-phase framework. The first (and current) phase allowed the airport to accommodate 16 million passengers per year.<\/p>\n

However, the airport has been upgraded to handle annual traffic of 21 million passengers without progressing to the next phase thanks to advanced logistics. The sixth phase will allow the airport to accommodate as many as 50 million passengers per year. As such, the current parallel runways have been designed to accommodate flights with equivalent annual traffic of 50 million passengers following the completion of the sixth phase of expansion<\/p>\n

Main Terminal
\nThe Main Terminal Building handles the all intra-Schengen flights, as well as several non-Schengen flights. All check-in desks are located in the Main Terminal. It has three separate levels, one for arrivals, one for departures and a food court level complete with a view of the eastern runway.<\/p>\n

Hall A: Operate flights to Non-schengen countries and Non-European countries.<\/p>\n

Hall B: Operate flights to Intra-schengen countries and Domestic flights.<\/p>\n

The Satellite Terminal used to handle non-Schengen flights only. The complex is now used as a Schengen facility. It has two levels, one for arrivals and the other for departures. It is easily accessible through an underground link complete with moving walkways. However, due to the reduction in traffic in recent years, it is rarely used nowadays, instead its parking stands are used for the long term storage of airliners, specifically two ex-Olympic Airways A340s, two Hellenic Imperial Airways B747-200s and a B767 belonging to the Greek start-up carrier SkyGreece Airlines, which will start operations within 2015.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
