Founded by L\u2019Or\u00e9al\u2019s Shane Wolf, Seed Phytonutrients keeps the earth and the farmer priority, offering a line of hair and body products that are natural, effective and formulated to preserve seed integrity in recyclable paper bottles.<\/p>\n

Wolf, who is L\u2019Or\u00e9al\u2019s global manager for Redken, Pureology and Mizani in the professional hair division, knows a thing or two about farm life. \u201cI grew up on a farm in Kansas, but on the other side of my life, I\u2019ve worked in the beauty industry for my entire career,\u201d he said. \u201cI was so determined that I was going to do something that brought some kind of value in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taking the idea, and recruiting a few members of L\u2019Or\u00e9al, like vice president of global brand marketing at L’Or\u00e9al Brad Farrell, he sought out experts. \u201cWe brought together a group of experts around two ideas – one was about saving the seeds and one was about supporting independent organic farmers,\u201d he said. He calls that group the Seed Squad.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a vision to create a brand with four cores sessions: seed diversity, supporting American organic farmers, creating the most effective natural products we could possibly bring to the market and American sustainability,\u201d he said. \u201cOver the past 100 years, 93 percent of seed varieties have been lost due to things like over-commercialization.”<\/p>\n

Wolf (pictured below) presented the concept to L\u2019Or\u00e9al – which adopted it into its incubator program – rather than branch out on his own, hoping to have a larger impact and create change from inside one of the world\u2019s largest beauty companies.<\/p>\n

Currently, the brand offers 16 products in the hair, skin and body categories that are formulated using seeds from organic American farms. Seed Phytonutrients partnered with the Hudson Valley Seed Company to provide packets of heirloom herb seeds inside each paper bottle – like a \u201cCracker Jack surprise,\u201d Wolf said. All products are packaged in glass or recycled paper bottles, which are made from waste, like cardboard boxes, at a L\u2019Or\u00e9al manufacturing plant in California and transformed into usable bottles thanks to company Ecologic Brands.<\/p>\n

The line, which ranges from a lip balm to a Superseeds Serum, is available today at seedphytonutrients.com<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As you might have guessed from the name of the line (or from the very seed-based ingredient list), seeds \u2014 sourced from organic American farmers \u2014 are pretty important to the brand. Instead of using chemicals to extract plant nutrients (such as antioxidants and vitamins A, C, D, and E) from the seeds, Seed cold-presses them to extract the good-for-your-skin oils inside.<\/p>\n

Then there’s the packaging. Seed products are packaged in shower-friendly paper \u2014 yeah, that’s officially a thing now \u2014 that’s both recyclable and compostable. They’re also made from recycled materials, so no need to feel guilty about hoarding bottles under your bathroom sink.<\/p>\n
