{"id":51179,"date":"2020-10-07T16:18:22","date_gmt":"2020-10-07T15:18:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dutyfreehunter.com\/blog\/?p=51179"},"modified":"2020-10-07T16:18:22","modified_gmt":"2020-10-07T15:18:22","slug":"glenury-royal-1984-is-latest-ultra-rare-last-cask-single-malt-release","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dutyfreehunter.com\/blog\/glenury-royal-1984-is-latest-ultra-rare-last-cask-single-malt-release\/","title":{"rendered":"Glenury Royal 1984 is latest ultra-rare \u2018last cask\u2019 single malt release"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gordon &amp; MacPhail has launched the second of four commemorative whiskies to celebrate its 125th anniversary.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>With spirit hailing from a closed distillery in Stonehaven in the eastern Highlands, the 35-year-old Gordon &amp; MacPhail 1984 from Glenury Royal is ultra-rare and comes from the last cask of the make maturing in the Gordon &amp; MacPhail\u2019s famous warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>It joins a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dutyfreehunter.com\/blog\/gordon-macphail-to-release-last-cask-very-rare-single-malts-to-celebrate-125th-anniversary\/\">1972 Coleburn whisky launched in September<\/a>. The remaining two whiskies in the anniversary series are set to be revealed in November and December \u2013 each as rare and unique as the last.<\/p>\n<p>No spirit has been distilled at Glenury since 1985, when it closed its doors for the final time and was demolished after a long history stretching back 160 years. Founded in 1825 by Captain James Barclay, the suffix \u2018Royal\u2019 was added due to the owner\u2019s friendship with King William IV.<\/p>\n<p>Its extreme scarcity in the market has since attracted whisky fans from across the world and it is a prized addition to any whisky connoisseur\u2019s collection.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51180\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51180\" style=\"width: 683px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dutyfreehunter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Glenury_1984_Bottle-e1602083841612.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.dutyfreehunter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Glenury_1984_Bottle-683x1024.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-51180 size-large lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" alt=\"\"   \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51180 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dutyfreehunter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Glenury_1984_Bottle-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\"><\/noscript><\/a> Gordon &amp; MacPhail Glenury Royal 1984<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Just 397 bottles are available worldwide of this elegant and oily 35-year-old whisky, which was laid down on Thursday 7 June 1984 and has been fully matured in cask number 2335, a first-fill Sherry Butt.<\/p>\n<p>Bottled at 49.1% ABV, the liquid itself is a rich amber in colour, with aromas of stewed fruit, cocoa powder, cinnamon, and toasted oak. On the palate, the whisky provides sweet orange peel, cherry, burnt sugar and dried fig giving way to a medium and fruity finish with notes of aniseed and sherry.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Rankin, a fourth-generation member of Gordon &amp; MacPhail\u2019s owning family and the company\u2019s Director of Prestige, said: \u201cSince 1895 Gordon &amp; MacPhail has released single malts from over 100 distilleries, many of which are lesser-known or closed.
