Fashion’s most romantic couple, Isabel and Ruben Toledo, are renowned for their award-winning and imaginative work in fashion design and illustration. This unique collaboration with MAC pairs Isabel’s sensational penchant for colour with Ruben’s vibrant energy in a palette of hues designed to sculpt, paint and transform the face. Specially designed white packaging features Ruben’s illustrations, an array of graphic lines and red-lipped faces brought to life with his one-of-a-kind aesthetic.
Q: How did you and MAC decide on collaborating?
Ruben Toledo: We were thrilled when MAC approached us to work on a collection together; it was a dream come true. We share a long history of 30 years with MAC, collaborating on many of the same charity projects. The opportunity to create objects of art and desire came together like a family affair, especially since MAC works brilliantly with artists and they have a global following of fans. James Gager (MAC Creative Director) and Jennifer Balbier (MAC VP Product Development) gave us complete creative freedom and helped bring our vision to life.
Q: What was your inspiration for the collection?
Isabel Toledo: To draw outside the lines, play with texture and the concept of three-dimension. I freed myself from the contemporary use of makeup and was inspired by face painting found through our history. Makeup as art not only enhancement. I had women of all cultures and ages in mind when creating this collection. Beauty is art to us and MAC shared their expertise to enable us to create texture through color. Colours such as yellow, greens, lilacs were used in combination for the eyelashes and same color eyeliners. Lipsticks in varied hues of reds were selected to create the eternal, unforgettable mouth. The human face is one of the most prolific art canvases in history and the greatest natural wonder.
