Hong Kong Airport officials have revealed details of a plan to build a mega retail, hotel, dining and office complex, which is set to start operating by 2021.
The Airport Authority said it hopes to create a facility that goes beyond the traditional idea of a shopping centre.

The 25-hectare commercial district on north Lantau Island will be developed in phases. Phase one will include retail, dining and entertainment facilities, as well as a hotel with 450 to 750 rooms. They are expected to be completed by 2021.

But there is not yet a timetable for the following phases, the authority said. It added it will take into consideration the progress of phase one on the decision.

Officials said Skycity will be very different from traditional malls, and their target is not just visitors but also young locals who can “spend the whole day there having fun.”

They also said there is an urgent need for another hotel. “The airport currently has only two hotels and they are always full. We hope the new hotel can ease the situation,” said chief executive Fred Lam Tin-fuk. “The completion of the shopping mall in 2021 can also benefit from the airport’s third runway due to start operation by 2024.”

They also believe the mall is in a strategic location for tourists as Disneyland and AsiaWorld-Expo are nearby.

Authority chairman Jack So Chak- kwong told a conference that once the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge and Tuen Mun to airport tunnel are completed, the complex would attract almost 100 million people from the Pearl River Delta by 2030.

The authority said it is “difficult” to estimate costs at this stage. Tender submissions will begin next month.
