Travel Retail Norway has unveiled a new Heinemann Duty Free store at Avinor Oslo Airport.

The new 2,400sqm store is based in the revamped North Pier and replaces the 1,850sqm store in the East Pier. The East Pier store is now being refurbished and will reopen with an additional 400sqm of retail space in the new year. The scheme is part of a 14 billion NKR ($1.6 billion) scheme to upgrade the airport.

When it reaches completion, set to be in April next year, the airport will have the two new departure duty-free stores and a 4,000sqm arrivals duty-free store in the East Pier, which partly opened in September and will be completed later this month.

The new store features new products for Heinemann at Oslo, including MAC and Urban Decay which both have prime shop-in-shop locations at the store’s entrance.

Travel Retail Norway CEO Håkon Fjeld-Hansen said new brands and layouts were aiming to catch the eye of the younger millennial travellers, who are beginning to make their mark on the duty-free industry.

“We always need to develop our concept. What I see is we need to have more products approaching the millennials and make sure our shops are exciting.” Mr Fjeld-Hansen cited male skincare brand Bad Norwegian as an example of the new “exciting” brands. For the opening event, Bad Norwegian had brought in a Harley Davidson and a DJ which were set up alongside its products, along with a photo booth.

Bad Norwegian forms part of the ‘men’s world’ area, which is one of the innovations in the new store. The revamped Heinemann shop also features a wider range of cosmetics, which make up the bulk of duty-free sales in departures at Oslo, and a dedicated area for microbreweries.

The whole airport revamp is set to be opened in April next year, with a dedicated fashion shop opening near the new North Pier duty free store in February.
