Diageo has partnered with artist Shan Jiang to release a limited edition Johnnie Walker Blue Label bottle for Chinese New Year.

The new label was designed by Chinese artist Jiang, with 2022 welcoming the Year of the Tiger on 1 February.

Jiang said: “In the last two years we’ve triumphed over tremendous challenges. I used that thought to look to the year ahead with positivity and use Chinese mythology and the idea of progress, of always moving forward, to inspire my designs and discover ideas from my culture that resonate with Johnnie Walker.”

Imagery on the blended Scotch whisky label pays homage to the tiger as a symbol of strength and progress, with the mammal showcasing wings to depict a famous Chinese idiom.

The tiger is also shown to be among clouds, so as to indicate signs prosperity, progress and good fortune for this year.

Jiang added: “That is why I chose the tiger with wings for Johnnie Walker Blue Label, it’s a common Chinese saying.

“My mother and father immediately came to mind, they have always supported me as an artist no matter how things were going, they gave me great strength to achieve – like the winged tiger ascending above the mountains to the sky. It gives me energy to think of this and to create something beautiful from this idea.”

Johnnie Walker Blue Label is created in small batches and comprises whisky sourced from across Scotland, including some dormant ‘ghost’ distilleries.

The brand will also be launching limited edition designs for John Walker & Sons King George V and John Walker & Sons XR 21 for Chinese New Year, both designed by Jiang.

The limited edition bottlings will be available in select markets globally.
