Mecca has officially entered the international duty-free and travel retail market, opening its first international airport store at Sydney Airport’s T1 International terminal.

The new 285sqm standalone store, located within Heinemann Tax & Duty Free, marks a significant expansion into a new retail channel for the Australian beauty powerhouse and puts the Mecca brand in front of both Australian travellers and an international customer base.

With 8.5 million passengers departing through T1 International each year, the location offers Mecca access to a high-volume global audience while allowing the retailer to adapt its signature combination of product discovery, expert advice and beauty services for travellers.

Mecca reimagines beauty for travellers

Rather than simply transplanting its existing store model into an airport, Mecca has designed the new concept specifically around the pre-flight customer journey.

At its centre is The Beauty Lounge, a dedicated services hub offering expert advice and a menu of treatments exclusive to the Sydney International Airport location.

Services include express LED and hydration, pre-flight de-puffing and sculpting, relaxing rituals, fragrance discovery and foundation matching.

The store also features a curated brand mix spanning Rhode, Diptyque, Summer Fridays, Byredo and Emma Lewisham, alongside Mecca Cosmetica, Mecca Max and kit.

Travel-specific beauty is another key focus. A dedicated Mecca Travel Minis fixture sits alongside travel-exclusive kit and Mecca Max sets, including the In Flight Calm Ritual Set, In Flight Sleep Ritual Set and Dew Crew – Hydrating Skin Essentials Set.

Customers can shop a curated selection of Mecca products tax free, while ANZ Beauty Loop members can collect their Beauty Loop boxes in-store, extending Mecca’s loyalty program into the international airport environment.

A new airside retail concept

The store also introduces a new Mecca design concept developed for international airside retail.

Sydney references have been incorporated throughout the space, with vivid colours, bright finishes and sculptural curved ribbon structures inspired by the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

An open, wall-less format creates clear sightlines and connects the store with the wider airport environment, while guiding customers between product discovery, shopping and services.

Maria Tsaousis, Chief New Concepts Officer at Mecca, said the move provided an opportunity to reinterpret the retailer’s customer experience for an international audience.

“We are thrilled to partner with Heinemann and Sydney Airport to introduce the Mecca experience to both Australian travellers and international visitors for the first time. This milestone marks an exciting opportunity for us to connect with a global audience and to reimagine our signature Mecca customer experience within an international travel setting, providing travellers with a feel-good space to inspire and unlock a sense of self-care, creativity and love, while in transit.”

Sydney Airport builds its premium beauty offer

The international opening builds on Mecca’s existing presence in Sydney Airport’s domestic terminals, extending the retailer into the airport’s international retail mix.

Mark Zaouk, Group Executive Commercial at Sydney Airport, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Mecca to Sydney Airport’s international retail offering, building on its existing presence in our domestic terminals, giving even more travellers access to one of Australia’s most loved beauty destinations.”

“The addition of Mecca further strengthens our premium retail offering, giving passengers access to an exceptional range of beauty products and leading luxury brands before they depart. It’s another example of our commitment to delivering a world-class airport experience that showcases the very best of Australian retail.”

For Heinemann Asia Pacific, Mecca’s arrival also strengthens the local component of its international beauty offer.

Rajshree Dugar, CEO Heinemann Asia Pacific, said: “We are proud to bring one of Australia’s most loved beauty retailers into an international airport environment for the first time. Mecca’s arrival at the new Heinemann Beauty Zone reflects our commitment to creating a more distinctive and locally relevant offer for travellers.”

“Together with Sydney Airport and Mecca, we are blending iconic Australian favourites and niche brands with globally acclaimed brands to create a destination that inspires discovery and elevates the passenger journey. The result is an experience that is uniquely Australian and highly relevant to today’s international traveller.”

For Mecca, the opening represents more than another location in its store network. It takes the retailer into international travel retail for the first time, combining beauty services, loyalty, travel-exclusive products and tax-free shopping in a format designed for a global customer in transit.
